Choral music runs through the veins of our Musical Director, Zoe Penman. Born into a musical family to opera-singing parents, she began playing piano and singing in groups before reaching school age; performing with her parents and four sisters at various venues, a la “Von Trapp” style. Since then, she has not stopped singing and sharing the joy of music with people of all ages and backgrounds.
After sitting in the back of her mother’s music classroom for most of her childhood, Zoe decided to enter the world of education and completed a Duel Degree in Music (Classical Voice) and Education (Secondary) in 2015, receiving the Dean’s Academic Scholarship award and ARTIE research scholarship. Since graduating, she has taught students from prep to pensioners, and today is the senior music teacher and Director of Choirs at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School.
An experienced chorister, Zoe has performed within many renowned ensembles within Brisbane, most notably, touring and performing with The Australian Voices. She is excited to bring her rich experience and passion for choral singing to Southern Cross Voices.
